The Artists

Natalie Chapman

I am a figurative painter based in Ceredigion, Wales, creating work that explores identity, class, human relationships, and the realities of working-class life. Drawing from personal experience, my paintings combine bold colour, expressive mark-making, and snapshot-like compositions to capture moments of tenderness, tension, resilience, and survival.

The narrative behind my work is rooted in growing up within social housing and navigating systems that often make people feel unseen or excluded. Through painting, I explore the emotional complexities of those experiences, giving space to stories that are frequently overlooked or misunderstood. Rather than focusing on hardship alone, my work reflects the strength, humanity, and determination that exist within these communities.

My practice is driven by a belief that art should be accessible, inclusive, and representative of a wider range of lived experiences. Through each painting, I aim to challenge social barriers, encourage conversation, and create work that resonates with anyone who has ever felt on the outside looking in.

My paintings emerge from an instinctive exploration of personal experiences, my internal landscape. I create works that translate reflective moments into visual form, transforming autobiographical content into abstracted imagery that speaks about universal experiences. I deliberately maintain a sense of ambiguity, bridging the gap between conscious and unconscious expression, revealing fragments of psychological complexities linked to personal events. My work features recurring motifs inspired by objects of personal significance—familiar forms that have populated my domestic landscape since childhood, now recontextualized as carriers of memory and meaning.

Living in West Wales, I am continually inspired by the dramatic landscapes and ever-changing seascapes that surround me. The rugged coastline, expansive skies, rolling hills, and shifting light provide an endless source of creativity and reflection. My work explores the relationship between land, sea, and atmosphere, capturing both the physical beauty and emotional resonance of the Welsh environment.

The unique Character of West Wales is central to my artistic practice. I am drawn to the way weather transforms the landscape creating fleeting moments of colour, texture, and mood. Through my work, I seek to convey a sense of place, celebrating the raw power of the coastline.

Working from memory, I aim to express the connection I feel to this remarkable region. My paintings are not intended as literal representations but as personal interpretations that evoke the spirit, atmosphere, and rhythm of the Welsh landscape. I invite the viewers to experience the beauty, energy and sense of belonging that comes from living and creating in West Wales.
